With all the turmoil that we hear about in the world, it can be hard to believe that there are actually some countries in which many of the people are genuinely happy. It sounds wonderful, of course, and it gives us hope that it is possible to truly have joy and a sense of purpose, even in the midst of terrible things like war, famine and poverty. Want to know where the people are said to be the happiest? Here are five of the happiest countries in the entire world.
1. Sweden
Sweden is second only to Japan when it comes to healthy life expectancy. Of course, this is the reason why the country’s citizens are some of the happiest in the world. The people of Sweden also view themselves as free from political corruption. They also feel that they are able to live the lives they choose, which contributes to their overall happiness as well.
2. The Netherlands
The people of The Netherlands are happy because they tend to have positive self images. They see their well-being as a priority, which is a key factor when it comes to achieving overall happiness. The Netherlands also has a high GDP per capita, and social support is high in the country. The Netherlands scored pretty high when it came to charitable giving as well, which further proves the notion that it really is better to give than to receive.
3. Switzerland
Switzerland was in the top 10 for countries in the categories of high GDP and citizens being able to live life as they see fit. The people of Switzerland also have a pretty long life expectancy. In fact, the only category Switzerland didn’t score highly in was charitable giving. However, the country does have beautiful scenery, such as the Matterhorn mountain, and the people there experience good health and have friendly communities, for the most part.
4. Norway
Norway’s biggest attraction is the freedom it gives its citizens to live the lives that are best for them. People build their homes in the mountains or near bodies of water, and are often seen exercising in nature. Norwegian people are often in good health and have great social lives, and this contributes to their happiness as well.
5. Denmark
According to Forbes, Denmark is considered the #1 happiest country in the world. There are about 5.6 million people living in Denmark, which means the country isn’t in the top ten when it comes to per capita GDP. However, Demark got the top spot in the U.N.’s World Happiness Report. A strong social support system, personal freedom for its citizens and low corruption rates in business and government are the main factors that make Danish people happy.
These are just some of the places in the world where you’re likely to feel the happiness of the people once you arrive. Even if you’re not considering moving, taking a vacation to one of these destinations every now and then could be good for your overall well-being.
