Traveling is a big part of my life, both personally and professionally, and staying productive while I travel is essential. Over the years, I’ve worked to develop ways to do all of the things I can do at home on the road. Working on my radio shows and podcasts remotely has been particularly challenging but after a few years of exploring a variety of tools, I’ve found my sweet spot with the right combination of hardware and software solutions. Here are the tools that work for me:
Finding the right hardware is at least half the battle when it comes to podcasting remotely. While a powerful laptop is a given, a microphone and headphones are equally as important.
When it comes to recording audio, your computer’s built-in microphone just isn’t going to cut it. Instead, I recommend a solution like the Blue Mic Snowball USB Microphone. This mic plugs in via USB and records crystal clear audio. It works with both Mac and PC and doesn’t require driver installations—just plug and play! I’m constantly amazed by the quality of the recordings I can capture with this microphone and how easy it is to use.
A pair of great headphones is essential to podcasting remotely, allowing you to hear what you’re recording and editing clearly. While there is a wide range of options when it comes to headphones, I find these SONY Noise Cancelling Headphones to offer the best value for the investment. They’re also extremely comfortable as long as you don’t have your heart set on a wireless solution.
Once you have the right hardware, finding powerful software solutions will help make podcasting on the road possible. If you have co-hosts or guests, you’ll want to start by finding a way to conference them in and record the conversation. Luckily, you don’t need to look for anything complicated or obscure—Skype offers all the features you need in a familiar, user-friendly interface.
To edit your podcasts and add music, I recommend Audacity. It’s a free, open-source piece of audio software that works on both Mac and PC. It offers powerful recording and editing capabilities and a great user interface. Importing, combining and editing audio files is easy with this software.
With these tools in hand, podcasting while you travel is not only possible but enjoyable. Now all you’ll need to worry about is developing great content.
